Difficulty bending over to grab a dropped TV remote? Trouble making it through your workday? If you answered yes, you may be one of the millions of people living with lower back pain.
Lower back pain, or lumbar pain, is one of the most common types of pain. In fact, it’s estimated that approximately 31 million Americans are living with it at any given time. Lumbar pain can make it much harder to do normal daily tasks, but it can also be effectively treated with physical therapy. A physical therapy technique called the Neurac method is one option that can help treat lower back pain.
Three ways the Neurac method helps treat lower back pain
Our physical therapists offer many techniques that can help treat your lower back pain. One method that you might not have heard about is the Neurac method. This technique focuses on increasing muscle activation and strength, and it does this in three specific ways:
- Increasing tension on specific muscles — The Neurac method typically includes being fully or partially suspended by cords and slings. This allows your physical therapist to adjust the tension on muscles that are weak and painful. For instance, they can adjust your body position to target lumbar muscles that are causing you pain.
- Using exercises to increase muscle strength — The Neurac method also typically involves you doing specific strengthening exercises. These exercises are performed while your body is suspended. This allows your therapist to adjust them to your specific fitness level. It also allows for a gradual approach to increasing back muscle strength, which can help reduce pain.
- Increasing muscle activation with vibration — Your therapist may also apply controlled vibration to your back muscles. The goal of this is to increase muscle activation even more during Neurac therapy exercises. In turn, increased back muscle activation can lead to better spinal support and decreased pain.
