Redcord® physical therapy

Constant pain in your muscles and joints can make it hard to enjoy life. Pain forces you to miss out on your favorite activities, like playing sports or playing with your children or grandchildren. Many people who suffer from long-lasting pain resign themselves to their fate and take medications to cope with it. However, there are other options that can help you manage your pain and improve your quality of life.

At Advent Physical Therapy, our team of highly trained physical therapists is passionate about providing effective treatments to help people like you reduce and prevent chronic pain. We are always exploring new methods that offer advancements in treatment, which is why we are offering Redcord physical therapy to treat pain using Neuromuscular Activation, also known as the Neurac method.

What is the Neurac method?

Many conditions and injuries that cause pain are related to abnormal movement patterns in your muscles and joints. The goal of Neurac is to address these movements with targeted exercises and neuromuscular reeducation.

Applying the Neurac method to muscle and joint pain can help you improve your strength and correct abnormal movement patterns. To begin with, your physical therapist will thoroughly examine your body for abnormal movement patterns with and without pain. Then, to apply the Neurac method, they will use the Redcord system in addition to other interventions to improve your movement and therefore treat your pain.

What is the Redcord system?

The Redcord system is a unique treatment system that uses elastic slings and cords to partially or totally suspend your body. Your physical therapist will guide you into the slings and cords where your body needs treatment. Then they will gently suspend your body, adjusting tension in the system as necessary to guide you into the position that addresses your pain through muscle activation.

Muscle activation is the process of “rebooting” muscles that are inactive or disturbed by your condition or injury. The brain essentially switches off these muscles in effort to protect your body from harm, but this often leads to inefficient and painful recovery. Muscle activation basically tells your brain to switch these muscles back on, so they can continue to stay strong and healthy, which can help improve your movements and reduce pain.

In addition to using the Redcord suspension system, your physical therapist will also:

  • Apply controlled vibration to selected sections of your body to help activate the muscles
  • Guide you through specific workload exercises in the clinic and for home exercise
  • Use hands-on therapy to help mobilize the soft tissue and joints

Who needs Redcord?

Many patients suffering from some form of musculoskeletal (muscles, bones, joints and soft tissue) pain can benefit from the Redcord system. It is as beneficial for a variety of people: (a) people who have a lot of pain and are having trouble offloading activity to be able to do movements as well as (b) athletes who are having pain with activities and have been doing corrective exercises that aren’t working. If your pain is affecting your movement patterns, your physical therapist may recommend applying the Neurac method with the Redcord system.

Your physical therapist may recommend Redcord if you have:

  • Low back pain
  • Pelvic girdle pain
  • Neck pain
  • Headaches related to neck pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Elbow pain
  • Knee pain
  • Ankle pain

Is Redcord painful?

One of the main goals of the Redcord system is to treat factors affecting pain, not to cause it. The concept of suspension from a sling or cord might intimidate you a little bit, but it is a safe and comfortable process.

The slings and cords we use are ergonomically designed to contour to your body as you suspend in the air just inches above a cushioned surface. Your physical therapist is highly skilled in identifying the source of your pain and applying the Neurac method correctly to help treat it, not make it worse.

The exercises involved in the Neurac method should challenge you and might cause some mild soreness, but they should never be painful or debilitating. In fact, a little soreness is a good sign. This means the exercises are effectively engaging the muscles and they are working on recovering.
